I am running ubuntu 24.04 on a Dell Inspiron 7559 laptop with a logitech m510 usb mouse. Occasionally on battery, the mouse stops working although the built-in touchpad continues to work. If I plug in the power cord, the mouse immediately functions again. So I suspect power management is at work.

While there are other instances of this problem on the forums, most are for versions of ubuntu that are out of date. The services referred to in those posts don't even seem to be installed or running under 24.04. They mention things like laptop-mode-tools, powernap, or laptop-mode that don't seem to exist (or aren't installed).

So, in short, what application/service/what-have-you is in charge of power management these days, and how do I stop it from disabling the usb mouse?

Not sure what to post for diagnostics - happy to add upon request.

  • It is not actually the mouse that is being turned off it is the power to the USB port. Look at your power settings and see if there is something there you can edit.

  • I did - but there is not. The power settings menu from settings shows several items like 'dim screen' or 'automatic power saver'. I've turned them all off but to no effect. If there are text files of power settings to edit, I'm not sure what they are.

  • You may also want to see if the hardware has any power settings in the BIOS.
