Since upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04 I have noticed that the boot screen now only shows text on a purple background.

enter image description here

The computer eventually goes to a login screen but this is after nearly a minute of loading. In 23.10 and previous versions boot times were around 30 seconds.

I'm using Ubuntu 24.04 on an Dell XPS 15 9510 with NVIDIA RTX 3050 GPU (535 driver)

  • Maybe it's a hardware issue and Ubuntu is OK. It's possible that your NVIDIA RTX 3050 discrete graphics card is dying but it's not dead yet, so it's giving you hellish performance all the time.

I found that after in upgraded to 24.04 my PC was slow - note, I am on an Apple Macmini from 2012 c/w 16MB ram. Previous Ubuntu took 35 to 40 secs. The latest version is approx 20 secs. Bear in mind, I am running kernel 9.3 (using Mainline) and I made sure all the updates/upgrades have been implemented. Check all you install s/ware at /etc/apt/sources.d - you will find the versions are Jammy etc. It is best to change it to Noble where possible, or at least Mantic for your software. The other way is to use the Software & Upgrades utility and inspect each line against the ppa to make sure you are using the latest version (sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade does NOT necessarily mean you have the latest version). It is an exercise for you to do and depending where you are on the Linux spectrum could be a learning exercise. Ask questions! Good luck.
