I have a system that was stopped working with Xorg. This applies to both gdm and desktops like ‘cinnamon’ and ‘unity xorg’. The symptoms are a blank screen and on unmoving mouse cursor. Gdm under weyland and ‘unity’ still work.

Cinnamon is my preferred desktop, and I’d like to get it working again.

The system is running Jammy desktop.

During an office move the system was temporarily set up to run headless using NoMachine. During that time, cinnamon was still working well. Now we have moved the system back to being a regular desktop. I.e. headed, not headless. Updates were also installed at that time . Somehow Xorg was broken in the process. It’s not clear if the updates or reversal of headless config changes is at fault.

More details to follow…

Please provide clear details as to what you're actually running, as the software stack (ie. what your installed OS is/was) are the starting point. You do mention jammy, but Cinnamon wasn't an official flavor of Ubuntu until 23.04.

  • Kind of a hacky fix but have you considered using lightdm instead of gdm?
